How Strong is Damascus Steel?
"Damascus Steel" is a blend of two dissimilar alloys of metal, so depending upon which alloys are used and how they're treated, the hardness and strength of the material will vary. In the case of our Damascus steel blends, we have performed extensive LAB TESTING to ensure that our rings behave consistently, and predictably. Our goal is to build a ring that resists scratches, corrosion, and deformation, but would shatter in a catastrophic impact situation and still be able to be removed at the hospital using standard methods.
In the case of the "hybrid" damascus:
The blend of Austenitic Stainless steel and high carbon tool steel allows us to obtain an overall hardness of C47 rockwell.
This material is meticulously heat treated in a proper heat treating kiln and is able to maintain exacting tolerances and predictable properties.
In the case of our "V2" All Stainless Damascus:
The blend of Austenitic and Martinsitic Stainless steels allow for an overall hardness of C40 rockwell. This material is meticulously heat treated in a proper heat treating kiln and is able to maintain exacting tolerances and predictable properties
Traditional Carbon Damascus (which be believe is not ideally suited for rings) has enough carbon in it to go through a series of different physical states which will effect it's corrosion resistance, ductility, and strength- processes that most makers utilizing carbon damascus for ring production do not mention or concern themselves with. This means this material can become extremely hard if heat treated in the same way you'd use this material in knife production, and it will not easily be removed if need be in a hospital. Do you want to loose you finger in an emergency because their ring can't be cut off? Have they done the research and testing to ensure that their rings can consistently be removed by medical professionals?
